Horror Movie Review #1

September 19, 2024

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. At least for me. It’s spooky season and as a huge horror and Halloween fan, I am completely stoked for this year’s shenanigans. I just need my costume. However, this post isn’t specifically about Halloween. This is the start of something new. Quick horror movie reviews. I will be reviewing, aka, giving my opinions on horror movies I’ve recently viewed. Of course, these are strictly my opinions on the movies. I always encourage others to watch them for yourselves and come to your own conclusions. These reviews may contain spoilers, so read at your own discretion.

Kicking off my first Horror Movie Review is “The Watchers” 2024. “The Watchers” is a story of an American woman that moves to Ireland years after causing the death of her mother. She is essentially trying to escape her guilt. One afternoon, she drives into the woods with her newly acquired pet bird to have a weekend away. She encounters car trouble and proceeds to leave her vehicle with her bird. Upon leaving, she realizes something doesn’t feel right and when she turns around to go back to her vehicle, it’s disappeared. She has now become a fixture of the forest. She meets a few people, including an old woman who seems to be privy to the goings on of the forest. The old woman warns that she shouldn’t be out in the forest after dark. She follows the group into this large box with a large one-way mirror. According to the old woman, the things in the forest love to watch them. This movie deals with Irish Mythology as well as how we grieve the loss of a loved one.

My opinion: I was hesitant going into this movie because it is directed by M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan. Though they are different people, they are still making movies in the same genres, and he has his hands in this as a producer. And, I have been gotten way too many times by M. Night. So, my expectations weren’t high and therefore, while watching it, I wasn’t disappointed. I feel like the movie was fast-paced and quickly got into what’s going on. Which is something I like. I don’t like long, dragged out first halves. However, I feel like I wanted to see more and know more about the creatures. The creatures held my attention more than the humans. In some parts, it was boring, and I was easily distracted. I felt like a lot of the characters were predictable in their actions and I didn’t find myself attaching to either character. From the get-go, I knew what was up with the old woman as she was very knowledgeable about some of the things happening. I usually can figure out certain characters quickly. A la the old woman in Devil by M. Night. Overall, it did not hold much of my interest, and I was bored with it.

I’d give it a 2 out of 5 moons because I love the use of mythological monsters/creatures and their backstories. Some parts were interesting but, it’s not a movie I would rewatch.
